Welcome To Sea Point
On the seaward side of Signal Hill lies Sea Point and the coastal stretch of Beach Road. The suburb of Sea Point, with its profusion of once-plush hotels and highrise accommodation, is one of the continent`s most populated areas, and was once the playground of the rich and famous. Although property prices are still relatively high, Sea Point is no longer the sought-after residential area it once was.
Nevertheless it remains a hubbub of entertainment, and boasting a lovely strip opf restaurants, all night cafes and bistros, and trendy nightclubs.
For an exciting alternative to many Italien eateries and fastfood outless, stop off at New York Bagels, the new self service sit down deli on the corner of Regent and Clarens roads.
The concept is unique in South Africa: Upon entry, patrons are handed and electronic card reserve their table of choice and then wander from one mouthwatering stall to the next, selecting from a varied menu that ranges from traditional Cape to Mediterranean - including several different kinds of bagels of course.
Once it`s time to pay, the electronic card which is 'swiped' through the system each time a selection is made at the food station - is swiped through the till for the final total.Be sure to stop at the superb adjoining deli and bakery.
Sun-worshippers of all shapes and sizes tend to congregate along thethree kilometres (two miles) of the Sea Point Promenade, popular among casual strollers, joggers and young rollerskaters and rollerbladers. The promenade, which includes a few small-food outless and kiosks, looks out over popular Rockland`s Beach.
Offshore, The Atlantic Ocean is dotted wiith young surfers braving the notoriously icy waters. The area also boasts two safe seawater pools:Saunder`s Rock and Graaff`s Pool. Visitors should be aware that the latter is popular among male nudists.
The recently revamped Sea Poing Pavilion also has four enclosed seawater swimming pools, with the deepest boasting a 10-metre-high (30 feet) diving board. |
